Third Grade Update

May 10, 2010

Dear Parents,

Good Afternoon! This is an up-date on the latest news in the third grade. I hope all Moms enjoyed their day yesterday, and I know the third graders enjoyed their time with their Moms and Grandmas on Thursday morning. Dads, your visit will be in June as we will celebrate Doughnuts for Dads on Tuesday, June 8th. Corrected Work was sent home today with all third graders!

This Wednesday the school children will honor Mary in a very special way. Children are asked to bring flowers for Mary to school on Wednesday morning. The Mass starts at 11:15, and all parents are invited to join us as we crown Mary.

The children are to read for twenty minutes each night and POST a Journal Entry on Tuesday and Thursday nights of each week. If there is no Internet access at home, the Entry should be written in cursive writing on a sheet of binder paper. The Journal Entry should be a well-written paragraph. Third graders should check their Journal Entries for errors in punctuation, capitalization, and sentence structure. This is a required assignment for all third graders!

We will be reading the novel The Trumpet of the Swan by E.B. White for the remaining weeks of the school year. If possible, all third graders should have a copy of the novel by Friday. If it is easier for you, please send four dollars to school with your third grader, and I will purchase the novel for you.

The Research for the Sea Animal Project should be completed. This week we will be writing the Rough Copy using the information from the Index Cards. Please check to be sure your third grader has completed his/her Index Cards and his/her Research Materials are at school. After the Rough Copy has been corrected; your son/daughter can then begin to write the final draft using his/her finest cursive writing. Children have the option of using a blue or black ball-point pen. I would encourage the third graders to use an erasable ball-point pen. The Rough Copy should be completed by Friday!

In Math, we have started a Unit on Fractions. There are many ways to assist your child at home as fractions are a part of our daily lives. Cooking is an excellent opportunity for using fractions at home. Please continue to drill your third grader on his/her multiplication and division facts. The web-site http://www.mathcafe.com is an excellent resource for drill sheets.

Finally, please continue to encourage your son/daughter to take pride in his/her work as we still have much to accomplish before closing the doors on another school year. Again, thank you for your positive reinforcement at home. As always, please contact me with any questions or comments.

Sincerely,
Ms. Maguire
