Update As We Begin A New Year

January 4, 2011

Dear Parents,

Good Afternoon and best wishes for a Happy New Year! Just an update as we begin a New Year!

The third graders have been assigned a Math Project entitled “If I Had $15,000”. Using brochures, catalogs, and magazine ads each third grader is to spend $15,000. Suggested ways to spend the money might include: setting up a business, a planned trip, or redecorating a room in their house. I have attached a sample format your son/daughter is to follow to this letter. The project is due Thursday, January 27th. The completed project should reflect four weeks of work.

In class we are proceeding with multiplication. Each Wednesday and Friday a timed test will be given to test the students’ multiplication knowledge. The first timed test will be given on Wednesday, January 12th. The test will cover the two, three, four, and five times tables. Additional reinforcement at home is necessary for proficiency. In class this week the children will be introduced to the concept of division as well as dividing by 0-5. Finally, the new Word Problem of the Month Chart was sent home with each third grader today. The completed work is due Friday, January 28th.

The children should be reading twenty to thirty minutes each night. One night during the week the children are to post an entry on their Wiki. If Internet access is not available at home, please have your child write the entry on binder paper and he/she will post it on his/her Wiki in the Computer Lab. The children should answer one of the questions under Topics for Journal Entries. The entry should be written in paragraph form and be seven to ten sentences in length. This week the entry is due Friday morning. In class, this week the children will read “Ananse’s Feast” to identify the theme of the selection. This month on Friday mornings we will read the novel Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. I have a novel for each student.

Please check your child’s school supplies as we begin a New Year! Each third grader should have the following supplies each day:
Homework notebook, neatly written and signed
3-4 sharpened pencils
2 PeeChee type folders
Colored pencils/crayons
A red pen or pencil
A pair of scissors
Textbooks must be covered

Finally, I will put the Weekly Homework on the Blog this trimester. Also attached to this letter is a schedule of tests for the month of January. A Corrected Work Folder was sent home before the break to be returned this week. The Folder will be sent home again on Friday, January 7th. As always, please contact me with any questions or comments.

Sincerely,
Ms. Maguire
